Episode 21: What Are Your Tools Of The Trade?

by MTRT on October 11, 2011

This episode is brought to you at the request of Rachel See Smith, owner of Music Therapy Services of Austin and a member of Music Therapy Pro.

In an email, Rachel writes:

I’d love to hear reviews of what instruments y’all would recommend or instruments we could probably “pass” on….(instruments in all budget categories).  Also, as I start my private practice, I’d like to know what you think are the essentials instruments you should start out with (on a tight, tight budget).

In this episode of the Music Therapy Round Table we will share our essential instruments and what to consider when purchasing instruments for work.

Also, thanks so much for including my name and website :)

(oh, and I read the blurb from my email you posted and……when did I start typing “y’all”? Haha! Texas is rubbing off on me more than I realized! :) )

Great discussion…
Just a note about cleaning instruments…a couple of years ago I discovered the cleaning wand from Verilux. It disinfects things I can not using rays of light (apparently surgical equipment is sometimes cleaned with this type of light in hospitals).

Pilots and air stewards travel with small portable ones to clean pillows and such when they are away from home. I clean my keyboard in between students with one and mallets that can not be washed. Also, the violin I use as a community violin, fret boards on guitars, banjo, cello, bows, metals things, buttons on autoharps, drum skins that have been slobbered on:)…you probably get the picture.

I can imagine for a music therapist who doesn’t have much time between sessions or room in bags/carts that one of these might be very useful.

Michelle,
I’m SO glad you mentioned the Q-chord! I love this one! I, too, use it for the children I work with who have severe physical disabilities. I also use the funky beats to accompany myself when I sing (kind of like the auto accompaniment on a keyboard, except the Q-chord is lighter and easier to carry around)! What a versatile instrument!
Thanks for another great show ladies!!
